The Black Dragon Kung Fu school held it's annual Kick-a-Thon fund raiser event, to raise money and awareness for Camp Hope, a non-profit organization whose goal is to construct a completely handicapped accessible lodge where combat wounded veterans may participate in hunting, fishing, canoeing, skeet shooting, hiking and relaxing in a peaceful setting.
We had the day declared National Martial Arts Day in Missouri, by Missouri State Governor Jay Nixon, as a way of saying Thank You to Prof. Ike Bear, for all of the hard work and effort he has put into the local martial arts community over the years.
In addition to the Kick-a-thon itself, we held a silent auction with donations from some great people and companies.
Black Dragon Kung Fu school was also proud to have as our special guests, Superman impersonator Charlee Chartrand, K9 Pack Leader Canine Rehabilitation and Training, Trovare di Spada, Classical Italian Fencing Tai Chi instructor Jeff Felty of the Green Dragon Society, Eileen Concannon, and 105.7 The Point.

Welcome to the St. Louis Martial Arts Directory Blog
Welcome friends. I am your publisher, editor, writer, etc, Jason Cook. As the Directory picks up readership and advertising, I will expand the staff, but for now, it's all me.
The primary goal of the St. Louis Martial Arts Directory (STLMAD for short) is to create a database of all of the martial arts schools in St. Louis, in an effort to help people find a martial art that suits them, and to build a sense of community between the people who already study martial arts. It's not going to play favorites with anyone or any one school. All schools that I can find and don't object to being listed will be, alphabetically by Art then by school. Until I can get a website set up with Sorting and filtering.
I would rather have someone studying any martial art, at a good school, than not taking anything at all because they can't find an instructor or a school near them. I am hoping the directory will help people find something in their area that they enjoy.
It is not going to filter any school, simply listing them and their contact information. If a person needs help with knowing what questions to ask and how to find a good school, I am more than happy to help them with that, but I won't ever tell someone not to study at a particular school. I am going to be unbiased and only present information that I know and encourage people to look for more information on their own.
The STLMAD will be creating a print and electronic format newsletter, containing interviews with local martial arts instructors, reviews of schools, reviews of equipment, book, and anything related to martial arts. It will be free of cost, supported by donations and selling advertising to local businesses and martial arts schools.
The Black Dragon Kung Fu Society is about to host a fund raiser event on October 23rd, 2010 at the Black Dragon Kung Fu & MMA School. And I am the main person organizing it, so once what is wrapped up, I am putting more energy into this little venture. One of the first articles (maybe not in the print version of the newsletter since it will be a lil long) will be a port mortum of the fund raiser. What I learned from it, what we did right, what went wrong, all things I hope fellow martial artists can learn from for doing their own fund raisers.
In the meantime, I am going to update the Directory I currently have with all of the schools I have found. If I missed yours, don't take it personally. Just email me at JasonCook@BlackDragonSociety.org and I will get you added ASAP.
Till next time,
Jason Cook
